and of things that will bite

Wow, my first post for the reverse bang. Paintings and illustrations below the cut.
I got to work with the super talented ratherastory, who wrote one heck of a creepy and fantastic tale, set in season 1. Please go read her beautiful fic; and of things that will bite.

Paintings and illustrations contain spoilers for the story.

Supernatural created by Eric Kripke, Copyright Warner Brothers, not mine and I didn't profit.

The original prompt #1076(rough draft): click here
Ever since dark side of the moon, I've had the idea of Sam hitchhiking by the side of the road in heaven, where Dean collects him and together they're like the hunters of heaven, keeping out all the monsters that want to invade...it's just a silly thought, but I used it as a base for this prompt. Luckily ratherastory took a different angle and gave this prompt a lot more substance and a kick-ass plot. Also a big thanks to the lovely Maichan808, for the perfect feedback and advice.

Final painting

"He crests a small rise, and it feels like moon is dipping down from the sky to meet him, huge and luminous, practically filling the windshield with its glow. A broken fence lines the road to his right, sagging listlessly toward the ditch. Up ahead he catches sight of a gnarled tree, twisted and dying, its branches snaking up into the night sky. It glows briefly in the flare of the Impala's headlights, casting grotesque shadows on the dead grass of the slope behind it. That's when he sees Sam's familiar silhouette, shoulders slightly slumped, pack slung over one shoulder." excerpt from ratherastory's and of things that will bite.

Illustration1-I wanted to do some extra drawings for the story, based on what the writer had written. Paintings like the panels above, take forever to create, so I went for a simpler style, though even these took a few days...Below is the character Katie, in a coma.

"The hospital, the coma victims, Katie. He gets a sudden, vivid impression of her, lying still and pale on a bed, prisoner of the mara's dream-world." excerpt from ratherastory's and of things that will bite.

Illustration2-inpspired by the final events of the story.

"Dean is about to shout a warning when he feels his own feet lose contact with the ground and he finds himself being hurled through the air. He collides heavily with the far wall, lands in a heap on the floor, and before he can find his feet again the mara is on him, shrieking and snarling, enveloping him in its icy-cold breath, bony fingers digging painfully into the flesh of his shoulders as it tries to get its hands around his neck." excerpt from ratherastory's and of things that will bite

I used a brush for the moons, (added some effects to them, so don't expect the brushes to behave exactly as I've painted) which you can find here.

Absolutely gorgeous work. I love the really different styles you tried out, very atmospheric in their own ways.

Oh, wow. I hadn't seen the other illustrations you did for the story, and they are breathtaking! I love the one of Katie in the coma: the contrast between the really warm red tones and the colder ones is really evocative, and the mara's hands are really, really creepy.

I love the beautiful mirror effect in the last illustration. Your mara is positively leering with menace there.

Just gorgeous. I count myself very lucky to have snagged your art prompt for this challenge, and I'm beyond pleased that you decided to create more art after the fact!

I'm glad you like the additional works, I wanted them to be a nice surprise for you. I'm glad you like the Katie piece, I liked the character very much and the mara and Babcia as well (though ran out of time to draw her, and to be honest, the idea of drawing several layers of black lace scared me. ^^)

It was a real pleasure to draw some more art for the fic :D

Oh, wow. Your art is absolutely stunning! It's really cool how you can work in such different styles, and they are both utterly gorgeous.

Really amazing, dude!

thanks so much, it was a lot of fun, the drawing style was a little different for me, so I'm glad to hear you say it turned out well. Much appreciated. :D

OMG OMG!! I didn't know that you liked to draw comic style!!! It's absolutely awesome! You should do it more often because WOW, it's technically breathtaking! I just love in the last drawing how you mixed the ink outlines and pure digital painting, particularly the bottom of the tree.

I don't know what to say about the "Hitch hiking in heaven" one! I noticed it immediately the day of the art claim! I don't know what adjectives I could use to describe it (awesome ? super-ultra original ? WOW ? it's not an adjective, never mind...). I am in awe in front of the very soft textures and the blue highlights. Not to mention the sky (because I suck at drawing skies so when I see a beautiful sky like this one I go all "OOoOoOoOoh!!" )

Your arts are definitely my favorite ones of the RBB so far. Really congrats to you Becc! ♥

Thank you very much, I really appreciate the comment :D

I didn't know that you liked to draw comic style.
Up until a few years ago that's what I mostly liked to draw, and then I really wanted to learn realism and I bought a nice tablet and joined dA etc.

I'm glad you like the paintings as well^^ I wanted to paint something I hadn't painted before, with the landscape and sky.

Thanks again, I always love hearing from you :D

The final painting turned out absolutely gorgeous, Becc! And I'm kind of in love with the illustration of Katie. While I adore your photorealistic digital paintings, I do hope you'll explore this style more often as well. It's such a striking composition with the bloodied arms digging into the scalp.

Hi! Thank you very much :D It's good to hear you like Katie, I kinda like that one as well. And yes I would like to try this style out more often, it's a lot fun. Thanks so much for the all the help with the paintings, much appreciated.

This is breathtaking. I love the two very distinct style you've used for your art and even without the excerpt of the story the art itself makes me want to dive right in and read. So to sum it up in one word - AWESOME.
becc_jbecc_j on November 10th, 2010 12:15 am (UTC)
thank you very much, i really appreciate your comments :D I hope you do have time to read the story, it's 16,000 words, so very readable in one session. The two styles were fun, I'm glad you like them both.
